Hello! My rating system is a bit complicated… I’m working on it, but for now, here is how I’ll rate books.
At the beginning of my reviews, I will give a quick overview of the book. This includes what age the book’s publishers recommend it for, or market age, what age the content is appropriate for (which isn’t always the same as the market age), and a quick overview of the review.
Then I will give a non-spoiler summary of the book, and I’ll give my overall rating. The overall rating will be the sum of two rating systems, both scored out of ten points. I’ll add the two scores together to get the overall rating out of twenty points.
Here are my two rating systems, which I’ll use in every review:
Book Elements Rating (Overall: scored from 10 points)
Characters (2 points): Are the characters realistic, distinct, and likable? Did I care about them?
Setting/Worldbuilding (2 points): Is the setting interesting and creative? Is it believable?
Plot (2 points): Is the plot interesting and compelling? Did I want to keep reading?
Narration (2 points): Is the story first person or third person, or something else? Is the narrator interesting? Is the narration style a good choice for the story?
Interest/clarity (2 points): Does the book keep my attention? Did I understand everything that happened? (For example, if I can’t get into a book because I’m confused, I’d probably give it a lower interest/clarity rating.)
Morality/Content Rating (Overall: scored from 10 points)
Good and Evil (2 points): Are good and evil present in this book? Are the sides obvious?
Character choices (2 points): Are the characters trying to do the right thing? If they’re not, are their choices presented negatively?
Content (6 points): Is the book clean? Does the book have objectionable content, like language or violence? If it does, is it really necessary? Is it presented negatively? *This one is the most important category. If I know a book has unnecessary bad content that isn’t presented negatively, I probably won’t review that book.
Then I’ll give my overall opinion about the book.
